Ordinary passports have a blue cover page. This is the most common type of passport issued to Vietnamese citizens. Article 14 of the Law on Entry and Exit of Vietnamese Citizens 2019 has regulations on subjects eligible for ordinary passports as follows:
Vietnamese citizens are considered for issuance of ordinary passports, except in the cases specified in Article 21 of this Law.
Ordinary passports issued to people over 14 years old are valid for 10 years from the date of issue and cannot be extended. When it expires, citizens need to carry out procedures for renewing their passport.
Ordinary passports issued to people under 14 years old are valid for 5 years. Passports for people under 14 years of age cannot be extended.
Ordinary passports issued to parents attached to children under 9 years old are valid for 5 years from the date the child under 9 years old is added to the passport in case the passport is valid for more than 5 years. In case the passport is valid for less than 5 years, the expiration date is the date printed on the passport.
Official passports are valid for 1 to 5 years and can be extended once for no more than 3 years.
Diplomatic passports have a red-brown cover. Subjects who are granted diplomatic passports are specified in Article 8 of the Law on Entry and Exit.
