Types of passport and subject that are eligible for each type

company

A passport is a personal document required when traveling, visiting relatives, or working in countries around the world. According to Clause 2, Article 2 of Circular 73/2021/TT-BCA, there are 3 types of Vietnamese passport: Ordinary passport, Official passport, and Diplomatic passport. In this article, let's learn about the types of Vietnamese passports and who is eligible for each type of passport.

1. Vietnamese ordinary passport

Ordinary passports have a blue cover page. This is the most common type of passport issued to Vietnamese citizens. Article 14 of the Law on Entry and Exit of Vietnamese Citizens 2019 has regulations on subjects eligible for ordinary passports as follows:

Vietnamese citizens are considered for issuance of ordinary passports, except in the cases specified in Article 21 of this Law.

  • Accordingly, all citizens with Vietnamese nationality are granted ordinary passports, except for the following subjects:
    1. People who have not yet complied with the decision to sanction administrative violations for violations specified in Clauses 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7, Article 4 of the Law on Entry and Exit
    2. People whose exit is temporarily postponed, except for the cases specified in Clause 12, Article 37 of the Law on Entry and Exit
    3. In case of national defense or security reasons according to the decision of the Minister of National Defense or the Minister of Public Security
The validity period of ordinary passports:

Ordinary passports issued to people over 14 years old are valid for 10 years from the date of issue and cannot be extended. When it expires, citizens need to carry out procedures for renewing their passport.

Ordinary passports issued to people under 14 years old are valid for 5 years. Passports for people under 14 years of age cannot be extended.

Ordinary passports issued to parents attached to children under 9 years old are valid for 5 years from the date the child under 9 years old is added to the passport in case the passport is valid for more than 5 years. In case the passport is valid for less than 5 years, the expiration date is the date printed on the passport.

2. Official passports

  • Official passports have dark green covers. Article 9 of the Law on Entry and Exit stipulates the subjects eligible for official passports as follows:
    1. Cadres and civil servants according to the provisions of law on cadres and civil servants
    2. Officials of public service units
    3. Professional officers and soldiers in the People's Army and People's Police; People who work in secret national organizations
    4. Employees of Vietnamese representative agencies abroad; Vietnamese state news and press reporters residing abroad
    5. Spouses and children under 18 years old of the person specified in Clause 4, Article 9 of the Law on Entry and Exit accompany or visit these people during their working term
    6. In case of necessity, based on the requirements and nature of the trip, the Minister of Foreign Affairs shall issue official passports according to the direction of the Prime Minister or consider issuing official passports according to the Prime Minister's instructions request of a competent authority or person specified in Article 11 of the Law on Entry and Exit for people not subject to the provisions of Article 11

Validity of official passport:

Official passports are valid for 1 to 5 years and can be extended once for no more than 3 years.

3. Diplomatic passport

Diplomatic passports have a red-brown cover. Subjects who are granted diplomatic passports are specified in Article 8 of the Law on Entry and Exit.

Validity of diplomatic passport:

Diplomatic passports are valid for 1 to 5 years and can be extended once for no more than 3 years.
