An adventure to Can Tho - the Capital of Southwest Vietnam

company

Nestled in the southwest of Vietnam, Can Tho is a vibrant destination offering a variety of experiences for travelers of all ages. Whether you’re wandering through lush orchards or gliding along the Mekong Delta on a boat ride, Can Tho promises something special for everyone.

Where is Can Tho in Vietnam?

Known as Tay Do, meaning the capital (Do) of the southwest (Tay), Can Tho has held its status as the largest city in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta since the early 20th century. It is famous for its bustling floating markets, unique culinary delights, and picturesque waterways, making it a must-visit destination in southern Vietnam.

Things to Do in Can Tho

1. Experience the Bustling Cai Rang Floating Market

True to its name, Cai Rang Floating Market comes alive on the Hau River every morning as hundreds of boats gather to trade goods.

This lively market offers everything from fresh produce to handmade souvenirs. You can even enjoy a local breakfast served straight from the boats. Some tours also include a visit to a hu tieu (rice noodle soup) factory, where you can taste unique dishes like pizza hu tieu and see how the noodles are made from scratch.

Cai Rang Floating Market even caught the attention of world-renowned chef Gordon Ramsay, who visited during one of his TV shows. He hilariously tried (and struggled) to replace a local vendor in making and serving breakfast dishes. Later, he admitted that hu tieu and bun rieu (Vietnamese crab noodle soup) from the market were among the best dishes he had ever tasted. In fact, the dish was even featured as a challenge on MasterChef US!

Tip from locals: The market is at its most vibrant between 5–6 AM. By 7 AM, many vendors will have left, so be sure to arrive early!

2. Take a Relaxing Riverboat Trip

If you miss the floating market, don’t worry—you can still enjoy Can Tho’s extensive canal system with a short boat ride.

At Ninh Kieu Wharf, many locals offer 40-minute private boat trips around nearby islets for around VND 200,000 (up to 4 people). It’s a fantastic way to see Can Tho from the water and breathe in the fresh air.

Tip from locals: The best time for a boat ride is late afternoon, when the weather is cooler. Don’t forget to wear a life jacket for safety!

3. Stroll Along Ninh Kieu Wharf

A favorite gathering spot for both locals and tourists, Ninh Kieu Wharf is a great place to take in the atmosphere of Can Tho.

Visit in the late afternoon when the crowd is thinner, and you can enjoy the cool river breeze. Walk along the wharf, and you’ll see a lively scene of boats coming and going, children playing, and couples admiring the view.

4. Admire the City Lights at Can Tho Pedestrian Bridge (Love Bridge)

Right at Ninh Kieu Wharf, you’ll find Can Tho Pedestrian Bridge, which lights up beautifully in the evening. Take a peaceful stroll across the bridge while enjoying the fresh river air and the illuminated skyline.

5. Dine at Can Tho Yacht Restaurant

For a memorable dining experience, visit Du Thuyền Cần Thơ (Can Tho Yacht Restaurant), a floating restaurant on a traditional wooden boat docked at Ninh Kieu Wharf.

Enjoy a variety of local delicacies while watching live musical performances—perfect for a romantic date night or a special evening with friends and family.

6. Visit the Historic Binh Thuy Ancient House

Built in 1870, Binh Thuy Ancient House is an exquisite example of French colonial architecture blended with Eastern influences.

Inside, the house features an impressive collection of antique furniture dating back to the 15th century, imported from both China and France.

This historic site also served as a filming location for L’Amant (The Lover), starring Jane March and Tony Leung Ka-Fai. The elegant architecture and well-preserved details make it a must-see for history and culture lovers.
